AADHAAR UPDATE-UIDAI Rolls Out New Security Mechanism For Robust Fingerprint

UIDAI deploys new security measures for robust fingerprints

In a statement, UIDAI announced the new security measures for fingerprint-based Aadhaar authentication, saying “it makes Aadhaar authentication transactions more robust and more secure”.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new security mechanism for Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication and quick detection of spoofing attempts, an official statement said on Monday.  An in-house developed artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) based security system is now using "a combination of both finger minutes and finger images" to verify the vitality of captured fingerprints.

In a statement, UIDAI announced the new security measures for fingerprint-based Aadhaar authentication, saying “it makes Aadhaar authentication transactions more robust and more secure”.  “The new two-factor/level authentication adds add-on checks to verify the fingerprint’s authenticity (life) to reduce the chance of spoofing attempts,” the statement said.

This development is expected to result in greater use in the banking and finance, telecommunications, and government sectors. This will strengthen the Aadhaar-enabled payment system and prevent malicious attempts by unscrupulous elements, thus benefiting the bottom of the pyramid. The new security system of Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication is now fully operational, the statement said.

UIDAI made sustained efforts with the authentication user organizations to inform them (AUAs/Sub AUAs) about the benefits of the new system. AUA is an entity providing Aadhaar-enabled services to 12-digit ID holders using authentication with the help of an authentication service provider. Sub-AUAs are organizations that use Aadhaar authentication to enable their services through existing requesting entities.

The UIDAI Headquarters and its Regional Offices have contacted all organizations to facilitate early switching to the new secure authentication mode for any user organizations (which are not yet migrated).  The adoption of Aadhaar-based authentication transactions is on an upward trend as it has been proven to be able to achieve several welfare benefits and services.

"By the end of December 2022, the cumulative number of Aadhaar authentication transactions has crossed 88.29 billion and an average of 70 million transactions per day. Most of these are fingerprint-based authentication, showing its use and usefulness in daily life. has been added.
